What about Alzheimer’s disease some may wonder? Did you know that one in eight people 65 years old and older are struck with this devastating illness that destroys the mind and over half of all people over the age of 85 are affected. These numbers will surely rise as the number of baby boomers grow in the upcoming years. At this point in time over ten million Americans are caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease. The average life expectancy of a person with Alzheimer’s is nine years. A vast majority of these people will need help with two or more activities of daily living (ADL’s) for a good portion of this time.
Long Term Care is defined as needing assistance with two or more ADL’s and over 11 million people are receiving long term care at home today with a variety of ailments that may range from having Alzheimer’s to just weakness from old age.
